Grey Rania is the Rania paisley printed on a cool dove grey, with the motifs drawn in mocha brown and picked out with fine cream lines. It belongs to the Siyane Collection at Benang Istanbul and comes as a 95 x 95 cm cotton square. If you want one scarf that works with most of your wardrobe on a normal weekday, this is a sensible place to start.
Beige and Baby Pink Rania keep the print close in tone to the ground. Grey Rania adds a second colour to the motifs, so each paisley has brown loops with thin cream highlights running through them. That makes the pattern easier to see and gives the scarf more depth than its quiet colour suggests.
The design follows the usual Rania layout. Large paisleys spread across the square, a branching spray of paisleys and buds rises from one corner, and a wide paisley border wraps all four sides. The lines are made of tiny loops and curls, much like chain-stitch embroidery on a traditional Kashmir shawl, which is where this teardrop motif, also known as the boteh, became famous.
Look at the plain grey areas in good light and you can see a fine diagonal grain across the fabric, which adds a little texture even where there is no print.
Each cotton fibre is a tiny flattened tube, and that structure is one reason cotton takes up moisture so readily. In a scarf it means sweat is drawn away from the skin instead of sitting there, so the fabric still feels comfortable at the end of a long, warm day.
Siyane made Rania for year-round wear, and in Malaysia that translates to a scarf that feels right in the afternoon sun and does not leave you cold under strong air conditioning. The cotton is soft but has some body, so it folds cleanly, keeps its shape once pinned and does not slip like satin.
The square measures 95 x 95 cm, a size up from the common 90 x 90 cm. You notice it most when the scarf is folded into a triangle. The front drapes lower over the chest, and there is more length in the two ends, which helps with wraps that go around the neck twice or with a loose knot at the front.
Grey is about as office friendly as a scarf colour gets. Wear Grey Rania with a white shirt and black or charcoal trousers, or under a navy blazer. Fold it into a triangle, pin it under the chin and wrap one end around the neck for a tidy, close fit.
Grey also sets off stronger colours well. Try it with burgundy, dusty pink, lilac or deep green, and the brown in the paisley will tie the outfit together.
Fold the square into a band and tie a soft knot, either at the neck or around the handle of a structured bag. The paisley border shows nicely along the ends.
Grey is a forgiving colour, and Rania’s cotton is easy to keep clean.
