Cocoa Rania turns the Rania design around. Instead of a dark print on a light ground, it puts sand beige paisley over a deep chocolate brown, so the pattern glows against the background. It is part of the Siyane Collection at Benang Istanbul, cut in cotton as a 95 x 95 cm square, and it is the warmest colour in the Rania line.
Beige, Baby Pink and Grey Rania are all pale. Cocoa goes the other way, and the reversed contrast changes the character of the print. The paisleys stand out clearly from the brown, every curl and loop in the outline is easy to follow, and the scarf looks more dressed up than its lighter sisters.
The arrangement is familiar if you know the range. Teardrop paisleys fill the square, a leafy branch of smaller motifs climbs out of one corner, and a deep paisley border frames the edges. Paisley has decorated shawls for centuries, from Persian textiles to the woven shawls of Kashmir, and on a brown ground like this it has a slightly vintage, heirloom feel.
Cotton is a natural fibre spun from the soft fluff around cotton seeds. It is breathable, it absorbs sweat, and it gets softer with washing instead of wearing thin quickly.
A fair question with any dark scarf in Malaysia is whether it will feel hot. Dark colours do absorb more sunlight than pale ones, so in direct midday sun Cocoa Rania will warm up a little faster than Beige or Grey. The cotton offsets most of that, because it lets air move through and keeps moisture off the skin. Indoors, in the office or under a mall’s air conditioning, you will not notice a difference.
Siyane describes Rania as a scarf for every season and for shaping easily, and both hold true here. The cotton folds crisply, grips once pinned, and has a soft sheen that suits the deeper colour.
At 95 x 95 cm, Cocoa Rania is larger than a standard 90 x 90 cm square. Fold it into a triangle and you get a deeper drape at the front and back and longer ends to play with, which is useful for styles where the ends are tied behind the neck.
Fold the square into a triangle and pin it under the chin. Take both ends around to the nape of the neck and tie them there, then let the point fall down your back. The front stays smooth and neat, and the paisley border sits along the jaw and neck.
Brown is easy to build an outfit around. Sage, olive and khaki look especially good with it, as do cream, camel and soft terracotta. For contrast, try it with a crisp white shirt or pale blue denim. Avoid pairing it with black head to toe if you want the paisley to stand out.
