Baby Pink Rania takes the paisley design of the Siyane Rania range and prints it in soft grey on a pale blush pink. The result is a pretty, easy colour that is not sugary. It is a 95 x 95 cm cotton square from Benang Istanbul, light enough for daily wear and large enough to drape well.
The pink here is muted, closer to dusty rose than candy pink, and the paisley is drawn in a warm grey. Because the two colours are so close in strength, the print never shouts. Up close you see every detail, and across a room the scarf looks like a plain, gentle pink with a little texture.
The layout is the same on every Rania scarf. Big teardrop paisleys cover the centre of the square, a tall paisley spray grows out of one corner, and a band of smaller paisleys runs around the border. Each motif is made of tiny flowers and curls, so the lines look almost hand drawn. The paisley shape itself has a long history. It began as the boteh in Persian design and spread through Kashmir shawl weaving before the Scottish town of Paisley gave it the name used in English today.
Rania is made from cotton, a plant fibre that most people already trust for their everyday clothes. It is soft from the first wear, lets heat escape, and soaks up moisture rather than letting it sit on the skin. In Malaysia that makes a real difference between morning and evening, especially if your day moves between hot streets and chilly air-conditioned rooms.
Siyane designed Rania as a scarf for all four seasons, and the cotton is why it works. It is not so thin that it feels flimsy under the air conditioning, and not so heavy that it gets stuffy outdoors.
The cotton has a dry, matte hand with very little shine, so it grips itself when you fold and pin it. Rania takes shape quickly and stays where you put it, which is more than you can say for many silky scarves.
Rania is cut a little larger than the usual 90 x 90 cm square. Those extra centimetres give a longer front point when the scarf is folded into a triangle, more coverage over the chest, and enough spare length to wrap one end around the neck without the scarf feeling tight.
Fold the square into a triangle and pin it under the chin. Take one end around the back of the neck and bring it forward, then leave the other end hanging long down the front so the paisley border runs along its edge. Wear an inner cap underneath for a neat line at the forehead.
Pink and denim are an easy match. Try Baby Pink Rania with a denim jacket over a white top, or with light blue jeans and white trainers. For something smarter, wear it with grey, navy, cream or black. Soft grey works particularly well, since it picks up the colour of the paisley.
Makeup and sunscreen tend to collect along the front edge of a light scarf. Treat those spots with a drop of gentle soap and cold water before the main wash.
