Beige Rania is the softest colourway of the Rania design in the Siyane Collection at Benang Istanbul, sitting alongside Purple Rania and Black Rania. It is a cotton square scarf in 95 x 95 cm, printed with taupe paisley on a cream ground. Nothing about it is loud, and that is the reason to own one. It goes with almost everything and still looks finished.
The whole square is covered in paisley, the curved teardrop motif that started in Persian textiles as the boteh, became famous on Kashmir shawls and later took its English name from the Scottish town of Paisley. On Rania the motifs are drawn in fine taupe and mocha brown lines over cream. Large paisleys fill the body of the scarf, a tall paisley plume rises from one corner, and a patterned paisley border runs around all four edges.
Look closely and each motif is built from tiny flowers, dots and curls, which gives the print a textured, almost embroidered look from a distance. The Siyane label is printed in a small white box near one corner.
Because the print is tone on tone, it reads as a soft neutral when worn. You see the pattern when someone is near you, and from further away the scarf simply looks beige.
Cotton is a natural fibre from the seed fluff of the cotton plant, and it is one of the most comfortable things you can wear against the skin in hot weather. It lets air through, absorbs sweat instead of trapping it, and stays soft after washing.
Rania is made as a four-season scarf. Malaysia only has one season, hot and humid, but the idea still holds here. Rania is comfortable outdoors on a warm afternoon and still feels right in a cold, air-conditioned office or mall.
Cotton also has a matte grip that silky fabrics lack. Once you fold and pin it, Rania holds that shape and does not slide around through the day. The surface has only a gentle, low sheen.
Most square scarves are 90 x 90 cm. Rania gives you an extra 5 cm on every side, and that makes more difference than it sounds. Folded into a triangle, the front point falls lower, so the scarf covers the chest more fully, and there is more length left in the ends for wrapping or draping.
Fold the square corner to corner and place the folded edge across your forehead. Pin it under the chin, then bring one end around the back of the neck and let the other hang long down the front. An inner cap underneath helps keep it neat around the face.
For a softer look, pin under the chin and let both ends fall loosely over the shoulders, so the paisley border frames the front.
Rania looks good with black, navy, white, olive and brown. A plain black shirt dress or a navy abaya works especially well, because the dark colour sets off the cream and lets the paisley show.
Cotton is one of the easier fabrics to look after:
A cream scarf can pick up foundation along the edge that sits on the face. Dab those marks with a little mild soap and cold water before washing so they lift out fully.
