A black scarf gets worn more than nearly anything else in a wardrobe. It goes to the office on Monday and to a kenduri on Saturday, and it gets washed far more often than the rest of your scarves. That makes the fabric matter more than it would for a colour you wear twice a year.
The Black Rania is a 95 x 95 cm square in soft cotton, and it comes to us from Türkiye as part of the Siyane Collection. It is opaque and grips well when folded. The Rania paisley print gives it more character than a plain black square, though from across a room it still reads as black.
A lot of the black scarves on the market are polyester chiffon. Chiffon looks fine in an air-conditioned office, but outdoors it traps heat, and by mid-afternoon it sticks to your neck. Cotton is a natural fibre that absorbs moisture and lets air pass through. Ten minutes in the sun waiting for a Grab, or a walk between buildings at lunch, feels very different in it.
The cotton is opaque. An inner cap or anak tudung will not show through, even in bright daylight, which is a common complaint with sheer black chiffon.
It also has more body than silk or chiffon. When you fold it into a triangle, the front edge stands up slightly and frames the face instead of lying flat against the forehead. The fabric grips itself at the folds, so one or two pins usually keep it in place for the day.
Rania is the paisley design shared by all four colours in this line: black, purple, blue and green. The curling teardrop motif has a long history in Persian and Ottoman textiles, and it is still one of the most common prints on Turkish scarves today.
On the black version the print is quiet. You see the detail up close, and from a distance the scarf simply looks black. It suits anyone who wears black for work but finds a completely plain square a little severe next to the face.
At 95 cm a side, this is the standard size for a cotton eşarp, the square headscarf worn across Türkiye. It is smaller than a Malaysian tudung bawal, where the everyday bidang 45 measures around 115 cm.
When you fold it into a triangle, the Black Rania covers the hair, ears and neck and finishes around the collarbone. It will not fall over the chest the way a bidang 45 or 50 bawal does. If you want that fuller coverage, wear it with a high neckline, or choose one of our long shawls instead.
The smaller size has advantages of its own. There is less fabric bunched under the chin, it takes less time to put on, and it is the right size to tie at the neck or knot as a head scarf.
The Turkish way. Fold the scarf into a triangle and place it over an inner cap, with the long edge framing your face. Pin it under the chin, take one end around the back of the neck, and bring it forward to pin at the opposite side. This is how the eşarp is usually worn in Türkiye, and the cotton holds the shape well through the day.
Pinned and loose. Pin under the chin and leave both ends hanging over the shoulders. It takes under a minute, so it is the easy option for errands and school runs.
As a neck scarf. Fold it into a narrow band and tie it once at the side of the neck over a blouse or shirt dress. Black against a white or cream collar looks sharp at the office.
Off the head. Tie it around a tote bag handle or wear it as a wide headband to add a bit of print to a plain outfit.
The black ground goes with almost any colour, but the print shows best where there is contrast. Cream, white, camel and soft grey all work well. From our Armagan Collection, try it with the buttercream linen tunic dress, or with the white tunic top and straight cut pants.
On an all-black outfit the print becomes the only detail. That is a clean look for a dinner or a formal event.
Black cotton keeps its depth of colour for years if you protect it from heat and direct sun.
