Raya and Wedding Scarf Ideas: Choosing the Right Scarf or Shawl

For Raya morning and a full day of visiting, a light shawl in chiffon or cotton keeps you comfortable from the first salam to the last house. Silk shawls come into their own in the evening, at hotel receptions and air-conditioned open houses, where drape matters more than airflow.

For colour, go a shade lighter or darker than your baju instead of chasing an exact match, and pair a printed scarf with a plain outfit or the other way round. Then order early, because courier queues in the last weeks of Ramadan are long.

Raya Morning and Visiting Day

Raya morning starts early and rarely slows down. There is prayer, salam with the family, then the drive to the kampung or a string of houses where you sit on the floor, eat, hold somebody’s baby and pose for photos in the heat. A scarf for that day has to stay comfortable for ten hours and survive whatever lands on it.

Chiffon and cotton handle this best. Both are light, and cotton absorbs sweat instead of sitting damp against your neck. Silk breathes better than people expect, but it marks easily with water and sweat, so a pale silk shawl and a plate of kuah kacang are a risky pairing. If you want silk on the first day, choose a darker colour or a busy print, which hides a splash far better than cream does. Our guide to the best fabric for humid weather goes deeper into how each fabric copes with Malaysian heat.

It also helps to keep a small kit in your handbag or the car: a few spare pins and a plain scarf in a neutral colour. When a child grabs your shawl or a splash of curry lands on you at the third house of the day, a swap in the car takes two minutes, and you carry on visiting.

Evening open houses change the equation. You are indoors, usually in air conditioning, and that is where a silk shawl makes sense, since silk drapes more fluidly than any other fabric in our range. The Kehribar collection carries our silk shawls for exactly these evenings.

Raya Colours: Let the Scarf Carry the Trend

A few colours take over every year. For Raya 2026, it was teal blue and “strawberry matcha”, a soft pink worn with pastel green, while rich browns were popular with mothers. Teal in particular was picked by whole families dressing sedon. Black, navy, maroon, pink and dusty blue never really leave. We refresh this section each January, once the new season’s colours settle.

A scarf is the cheapest place to wear a trend. If the family has agreed on a sedondon colour you doubt you will wear again, buy the baju in that colour and choose a scarf in a neutral that works with half your wardrobe. It works the other way too: keep a classic baju and let the trend colour show up on the scarf instead.

Exact matches are harder than they look online. Screens display colour differently, and every dye batch varies a little, so a scarf that matches your baju on your phone can look slightly off in daylight. A tone-on-tone look, one shade lighter or darker, looks deliberate and is far easier to get right. You can also pick a colour out of the print on your baju and repeat it in the scarf.

Print and plain should take turns. With a patterned baju kurung, a plain scarf keeps the outfit from getting busy. With a plain kebaya or a solid long dress, a printed silk square gives the outfit a focal point. Our SOFEA scarf, with its emerald paisley field and taupe border, is made for that job, and if you are building a Raya outfit from scratch, the plain long dresses in our Armagan Collection make a good base for it.

What to Wear as a Wedding Guest

Syawal is a popular month for weddings, so a Raya scarf often gets a second outing within weeks. Start with the invitation. If the kad jemputan mentions a colour theme or dress code, follow it. If it does not, two habits keep you on safe ground: skip head-to-toe white, since many brides wear white for the akad nikah, and leave heavy embellishment to the bride and her dulang girls.

Then think about the venue:

  • A kenduri under a canopy at home or in the kampung: usually daytime and warm, so treat it like Raya morning and reach for chiffon or cotton.
  • A dewan or community hall: somewhere in between. A matte twill or crepe shawl looks smart without trapping heat.
  • An evening hotel reception: the right place for a silk shawl. Matte silk twill photographs more evenly than glossy satin, which tends to bounce the camera flash straight back.

If you are family and dressing sedondon, order every scarf in one go, in one colour. Pieces bought weeks apart can come from different dye batches, and the difference shows clearly in a group photo.

Pins and Brooches on Silk

Silk does not forgive thick pins. Use fine, sharp pins or magnetic pins, and try to pin through the same spot rather than moving the pin around through the day. If you are wearing a kerongsang or brooch, fasten it through a folded double layer so its weight does not pull on a single thread. A snag in silk twill is very hard to undo.

Square Scarf or Shawl for Raya?

Both work, so it comes down to the look you want. A square folded into a triangle gives a neat, structured shape, and both the Turkish-style tudung and bawal worn selendang-style have shown up as Raya trends in recent years.

Most Turkish squares, ours included, measure 90 to 95 cm, which is smaller than a bidang 45 bawal, so they sit higher on the chest. A shawl gives you more length for fuller coverage and draped styles. Our guide to the difference between a scarf, a shawl and a tudung explains the sizes properly, and 5 ways to tie a Turkish shawl covers the wrapping.

Buying a Scarf as a Raya Gift

Scarves are one of the easier Raya gifts to get right, as long as you play it safe on colour and size. Unless you know exactly what she plans to wear on Raya, choose a colour that sits well with many outfits, such as navy, maroon or soft pink, or a print that already mixes several colours.

Size depends on how she wears her tudung. If you are not sure, a square silk scarf is the safer pick, because it can also be knotted at the neck or tied to a handbag. For an older relative who usually wears a longer bawal or a selendang, a shawl is the better choice, since a 90 cm square may feel short to her. For mothers and mothers-in-law, a silk shawl tends to come out again every Raya, as long as it is stored well between seasons.

When to Order for Raya

Raya 2027 is expected on about 10 March, with Ramadan starting around 8 February, though both depend on the moon sighting. We pack orders within 1 to 5 working days, then Pos Laju takes 2 to 4 working days to Peninsular Malaysia and 4 to 7 working days to Sabah and Sarawak, as set out on our shipping and payment page. Couriers slow down everywhere in the final two weeks of Ramadan.

In practice that means:

  • Peninsular Malaysia: order by mid-February.
  • Sabah and Sarawak: order by early February.
  • Family sedondon orders: earlier again, so there is time to sort out a wrong colour or a missing piece before Raya.

Open the parcel the day it arrives. If something is damaged or is not what you ordered, you have 7 days from delivery to tell us, and the piece needs to be unworn with its tags still on, as our refund and returns policy explains. Discovering a problem on Raya morning is too late to fix it.

Get Your Silk Ready for the Next Invitation

Before you fold a Raya scarf away, check the edge that sat against your face for foundation, and air it out if it smells of perfume or food. Deal with marks within days rather than months, because makeup and oil are much harder to lift once they have set.

Raya Haji falls around 17 May 2027, and wedding invitations keep arriving through Syawal, so a scarf stored clean and dry will be ready when you need it. Our guide on how to wash and store a silk scarf walks through each step.

FAQs

What colour scarf should I wear for Raya?

Go one shade lighter or darker than your baju, or repeat a colour from its print. Trend colours change every year, so the scarf is the cheapest place to wear one without committing a whole outfit to it.

Is silk too hot for Raya?

Silk breathes well, but it marks easily with sweat and water. It suits evening open houses and air-conditioned venues better than a long day of visiting in the heat, where chiffon or cotton is more comfortable.

What tudung colour should a wedding guest wear?

Follow any colour theme on the invitation. If there is none, pick a colour that complements your outfit, avoid head-to-toe white, and keep embellishment simple so the bride stays the focus.

When should I order a scarf for Raya?

Allow at least three weeks. For Raya 2027, order by mid-February for Peninsular Malaysia and by early February for Sabah and Sarawak, and earlier still for family sedondon orders.

Can I wear a square scarf for Raya?

Yes. Fold it into a triangle over an anak tudung for a neat, structured look. Turkish squares are usually 90 to 95 cm, so they give shorter coverage than a bidang 45 bawal.
